The Cagayan State University hosted the 3rd International Conference on Agriculture and Forestry (ICOAF) on June 1-3, 2016 at Hotel Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila in Pasay City.
It partnered with the Sri Lankan-based The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM) for the three-day event with the theme "Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry as Essential Response to the Challenges of Global Food Security and Environmental Stability."
Dr. Romeo Clemente, Associate Professor IV of the College of Teacher Education and Gender and Development Focal Person of the University, co-chaired the conference which was participated in by some 60 scholars from Asia, Europe and the United States of America.
With Dr. Clemente in the conference was Dr. Jose Guzman, vice president for research and development, extension and training, who welcomed the participants who, he said, had the compelling reasons to be part of the conference due to what is happening in the environment brought about by the global climate change.
Clemente and Guzman also served as technical session chairs who presided over the research presentations of the participants who included four of the professors of the University: Dr. Ricardo Casauay (Piat), Dr. Froilan Pacris (Sanchez Mira), Dr. Angelina Gonzales (Lal-lo), and Prof. Neil Nemesio Baliuag (Piat).
Dr. Nicomedes P. Eleazar, director at the Bureau of Agricultural Research of the Department of Agriculture, graced the occasion with his keynote speech on the conference theme.
He shared the stage with another keynote speaker, Dr. Samih Abubaker, dean of the faculty of agricultural technology of Al-Balqa Applied University, Jordan, Dr. Edwin Macaballug, president of Batanes State College, who also served as one of the technical session chairs, and Mr. Isanka Gamage, convener of the ICOAF 2016 and managing manager of TIIKM.
At the closing, the organizers of the conference gave out special awards to the best paper presentations in each of the 10 areas: forestry, animal science and apiculture, biochemistry and molecular study, soil science and soil fertility, agricultural economics, horticulture and vegetable, food security, social research and gender-related study, rice, climate change mitigation, and poster presentation.
Prof. Baliuag of the College of Agriculture - Piat Campus won the best paper in rice research.
It was highlighted by the announcement of the best paper among all the papers presented and the raffle draw of the winner of a free registration fee at the 2017 ICOAF set on July 1-3, 2017 in Dubai. Prof. Gonzales of CSU Lallo Campus was picked as the lucky winner.
