Cagayan State University (CSU) has formalized today a partnership with the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) to spearhead innovative maritime research.
CSU’s Officer-in-Charge of the Office of the University President, Dr. Arthur G. Ibañez, signed a memorandum of agreement with DOST-PCIEERD to implement a two-year research project titled “Electrically Powered Multi-Purpose Boat.”
The signing ceremony took place at the Philippine Trade Training Center in Pasay City. Representing DOST was PCIEERD Executive Director Dr. Enrico Paringit, CSU Aparri Campus Executive Officer Dr. Audy Quebral, who is also the research program leader, witnessed the event.
This innovative project focuses on designing and developing an electric-powered boat as a more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional diesel or gasoline engines.
The vessel is specifically tailored to meet the needs of local fisherfolk operating in the municipal waters along the Cagayan River, promoting sustainable fishing practices and improving operational efficiency.
“The primary goal is to introduce an environmentally sustainable transportation alternative that can enhance the livelihood of local fishers while promoting eco-friendly practices,” CEO Quebral said.
Beyond its economic benefits, the project also seeks to support the preservation of indigenous culture and arts by integrating traditional practices with modern, sustainable technology.
CSU and DOST-PCIEERD hope that this initiative will serve as a model for environmentally conscious maritime development in the region and beyond.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ibañez handed over copies of the Coffee Table Book dubbed “Rakuh: Morphology of Ivatan Houses,” which captures the distinct architectural heritage of Ivatan dwellings and the rigorous research undertaken to preserve their resilience and cultural significance. #IRMF
