To help increase local farmers’ productivity, CSU Gonzaga launched the
project “Capacitating Farmers on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and
Entrepreneurship for Sustainable and Rural Development”.
The project components, Farmer Field School (FFS) and Farm Business School
(FBS), aim to provide the farmers better understanding of the concept and
practices of community integrated pest management and to improve their
entrepreneurial skills.
To encourage active participation of the farmers, the project used innovative and
participatory farm field school approach that emphasizes problem solving and
discovery-based learning. Trainings on pest management and entrepreneurship
gave farmers opportunities to take control and resolve relevant problems in
farming.
With the two years of project implementation, a total of 60 farmers were
trained on vegetable production while 48 farmers focused on developing their
knowledge and skills on rice production. Two techno-demo farms were also
established within the implementation period of the project.
