CSU SUPPORTS LAUNCH OF E-TRANVIA, BLENDING HERITAGE PRESERVATION WITH GREEN TECHNOLOGY

By Office of the University President | March 19, 2026 |

Cagayan State University (CSU) joined the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and other national and academic partners in the launch of the 18-seater all-electric e-Tranvia on March 19, 2026, at Intramuros, Manila, an initiative that seamlessly integrates heritage preservation with sustainable innovation.

The e-Tranvia, designed to transport visitors within the heritage spaces of Intramuros, replaces traditional diesel-powered systems with a zero-emission alternative, promoting cleaner air and a quieter, more immersive cultural experience.

Intramuros Administrator Atty. Joan M. Padilla emphasized that the initiative reflects a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, while expressing appreciation to DOST, CSU, University of the Philippines Diliman, DOST–Industrial Technology Development Institute, and DOST-NCR for their significant contributions in bringing the project to fruition.

In his message, DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr. said that the e-Tranvia goes beyond technological advancement, describing it as a source of hope amid global challenges such as rising fuel costs.

“We would really want to make sure that Filipino people will benefit from the technology, and by showcasing what we can do, we hope that through this small community, the other smart and sustainable communities pilot areas can see what we have established in Intramuros,” Dr. Solidum Jr. said.

In his message of support, CSU OIC President Dr. Arthur G. Ibañez, highlighted the importance of balancing preservation and progress.

“The e-Tranvia symbolizes that heritage conservation and technological advancement can go hand in hand. It allows us to protect our history while addressing modern challenges such as climate change and urbanization,” he said.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to introduce scalable green mobility solutions across the country, with additional units planned for deployment in other locations.

Dr. Ibañez shared that currently, two 11-seater eTranvia units have been produced for the local government of Tupi, South Cotabato, three 19-seater units are set for delivery to the Intramuros Administration, and a 19-seater unit is being assembled specifically for Malacañang Palace, in coordination with DOST Region 02.

Developed through a collaboration of CSU, UP Diliman, and DOST – ITDI and funded by DOST, the e-Tranvia features an abaca fiber-reinforced composite body, integrating indigenous materials with advanced engineering. Powered by a 144V 20kW AC induction motor and a LiFePO4 battery system, it offers efficient and reliable performance suited for urban and heritage environments.

Also expressing their support for the initiative were Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang, DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations, Dr. Leah J. Buendia, DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development, Dr. Lew Andrew R. Tria, Director, Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute, UP Diliman, Dr. Annabelle V. Briones, Director, DOST - ITDI, Engr. Niñaliza H. Escorial, Deputy Executive Director and Officer-In-Charge, Office of the Executive Director, DOST-PCIEERD, and Engr. Romelen T. Tresvalles, Regional Director, DOST-NCR.
