A 6,000-square-meter orchard established at CSU Lasam Campus is set to become a research hub for climate-resilient agriculture under the Campus Resilience, Environmental Enhancement, and Knowledge Systems Integration for Development (CREEKSIDE) Project, launched on April 14.
Campus Executive Officer Dr. Florante Victor M. Balatico emphasized that the initiative will provide agriculture students and faculty with a venue for studying fruit-bearing trees and their adaptability to Cagayan’s climate.
Initiated by Officer-In-Charge President Dr. Arthur G. Ibañez, the project advances research on how various fruit species can thrive under local environmental conditions, forming part of CSU’s broader greening and sustainability agenda.
In his message, Dr. Ibañez acknowledged the challenges faced by the university in implementing large-scale programs, particularly due to budget constraints. Despite this, he expressed gratitude to various partners who continue to support CSU through assistance, services, materials, and financial contributions, emphasizing the university’s openness to collaboration with stakeholders who share its vision for sustainable development.
Plans are underway to expand the project to 50 hectares by June and 100 hectares by December, with support from the Department of Science and Technology through research funding.
Representing Mayor Dante Dexter A. Agatep Jr., Municipal Administrator Benefranco Alvarez commended the initiative, describing it as a practical step toward both environmental sustainability and community development.
The orchard promotes climate-resilient agriculture while supporting key Sustainable Development Goals such as Zero Hunger and Climate Action.
Around 250 fruit-bearing trees, including durian, pomelo, santol, avocado, mangosteen, lansones, and guyabano, were planted during the ceremonial launch.
