The centuries-old stone houses of Batanes tell stories of resilience, identity, and craftsmanship. Today, they also tell a story of science and innovation.
A collaborative project involving Cagayan State University has gained national recognition after the GMA Integrated News documentary Stone by Stone, Saving the Heritage Houses of Batanes received the DOST-PCIEERD Kabalikat Best STI Feature Award.
The documentary brought national attention to the groundbreaking research Assessment, Development and Preservation for Typhoon and Earthquake-Resilient Ivatan Houses, an initiative that blends traditional Ivatan building knowledge with modern engineering and architectural interventions.
The project documented heritage houses throughout Batanes, analyzed indigenous construction materials, designed structural improvements, and constructed a prototype house capable of withstanding stronger typhoons and earthquakes while preserving the distinctive character of Ivatan architecture.
Developed through the collective efforts of CSU, DOST, Batanes State College, NCIP, the Provincial Government of Batanes, local government units, and the Ivatan community, the initiative exemplifies how research can serve both people and heritage.
More than preserving structures, the project protects culture, strengthens community resilience, and demonstrates that innovation is most meaningful when it empowers communities while honoring their traditions.
For CSU, the recognition reflects its continuing mission to produce transformative research that creates lasting impact—where science, culture, and sustainable development come together for the benefit of future generations.
