HOPPSTÄDTEN-WEIERSBACH, Germany — Cagayan State University Officer-in-Charge University President Dr. Arthur G. Ibañez presented the University's executive and multi-dimensional approach to sustainability during the 12th International Workshop on UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings (IWGM) 2026, joined by Vice President for Research, Development, and Extension Dr. Audy R. Quebral.

Held under the theme “Advancing Sustainable Campuses through Governance, Digitalization, and Integrated Performance,” the international workshop provides a platform for higher education institutions to exchange sustainability practices and strengthen global collaboration.

The presentation of Dr. Ibañez, dubbed “Greening Cagayan State University: Executive Multi-Dimensional Approach to Institutional Development,” was delivered under Session 4A: Managing Governance and Digitalization.

He highlighted the University's approach to sustainability as an institutional responsibility requiring the participation of the entire university community.

According to Dr. Ibañez, Cagayan State University's sustainability agenda is anchored not simply on ranking performance but on its responsibility to students, communities, the environment, and future generations.

He presented Cagayan State University's sustainability journey through three key areas: its institutional landscape and four major thrusts; its engagement with the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings; and its continuing commitment to strengthening sustainability initiatives and their long-term institutional impact.

The presentation emphasized the integration of sustainability across campus development, university operations, academic programs, research, and community engagement.

Dr. Ibañez also highlighted the University's view of UI GreenMetric as a framework for institutional reflection and continuous improvement.

Rather than treating sustainability as a stand-alone agenda, Cagayan State University seeks to integrate it into its broader institutional development strategies.

The 2026 IWGM discussions cover major sustainability dimensions including setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water management, transportation, education and research, and governance and digitalization.

The workshop is being hosted by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, Trier University of Applied Sciences, in Germany, bringing together global higher education leaders and sustainability practitioners.
