Cagayan State University through the NEDA Regional Director Dionisio C. Ledres, Jr, opened doors for benchmarking practices, partnership, and collaboration with the Local Government of Tuburan, Cebu led by Mayor Democrito “Aljun Diamante”. Tuburan is the first and largest supplier of homegrown coffee in Cebu making it the coffee capital of Cebu. It is developed as a community-based industry where local farmers from 29 barangays were trained on how to grow the crop and processed the beans into coffee. Tuburan has also diversified into the bamboo plantation and set up its bamboo sanctuary. Mayor Diamante envisioned coffee and bamboo farming and industry as a more sustainable livelihood for upland communities, discouraging them and providing a better alternative source of income than logging or making charcoal, both of which have significantly contributed to deforestation. Both the coffee plantation and the bamboo sanctuary have become popular agri-tourism destinations for Cebu visitors.
As CSU has both coffee and bamboo as niche-based products in CSU Lallo and CSU Gonzaga, respectively, and aims to develop community-based enterprises as a contribution to the region's sustainable development goals, the visit to Tuburan, Cebu provided CSU ExeCom-ManCom and members of the Board of Regents with 360-degree benchmarking experiences (from coffee seeds to cup). These opportunities allowed for the creation of a back-to-back Bamboo and Coffee Summit for the Futures, with Mayor Democrito "Aljun Diamante serving as a resource speaker. LGUs, farmers, agribusiness entrepreneurs, students, and educators from Cagayan will be invited to participate in the back-to-back summit on October 27 and 28, 2022 to be hosted and held in CSU.
