The convergence of minds on Smart Agrculture continues as experts and intellectuals meet
again for the 2nd day of CSU’s International Conference on SMART Agriculture (ICSA) conducted last
September 29, 2023 at Claude Andrews Convention Center, CSU-Andrews Campus.
The morning plenary sessions opened with speakers who shared best-case practices on farming with the
utilization of technology as found in different countries. Dr. Hsin-i Chiang from National Chung
Hsing University, Taiwan started the presentation on the “Agricultural Intelligence for Sustainable
Livestocks Systems” as implemented in their country. Dr. Andrew Keong Ng, Associate Professor from
Singapore Institute of Technology shared his insights “Towards Smart and Sustainble Aquaponic for
Liveable Cities” as established in Singapore’s vertical farms. Undersecretary for Regional
Operations of the Department of Science and Technology Sancho A. Mabborang shared the “Science and
Technology for Sustainable Agrifood System” in the context of the Philippines. On the local
government initiative area, Hon. Democrito M. Diamante, Mayor of the Municipality of Tuburan, Cebu
Philippines detailed their municipalities’ initiatives in their growing agricultural enterprise in
his talk, “Futures of Community-based Coffee and Bamboo Industry: Based on Best Practices and
Experiences” where he also handed free Tuburan Coffee for the participants to try.
For the afternoon , parellel sessions were conducted based on various applicable areas of SMART
Agriculture which include the Futures of Coffee, Cacao and other High-Value Crops; Sustainable Soil,
Water Management Practices; Sustainable Environment and Disaster Risk Management; Cyclic Agriculture
and Sustainable Farm Waste Management; Precision Agriculture; Entrepreneurial Agriculture through
Artificial Intelligence; Sustainable Aquaculture and Marine Resources Management; and Agricultural
Tourism. All sessions include 6 paper presentations on the themes where participants get to ask
questions to the researchers. Best presenters and best papers for each thematic area where also
selected and awarded.
At the end of the day, insights and reflections on SMART Agriculture were shared by Dr. Darius
Allado from Isabela State University and Ms. Naomi Ubina from National Taiwan University who thanked
CSU for the opportunity to be part of the conference as they became more inspired to make
agriculture more sustainable.
The closing statement by Quirino State University President Hermenegildo F. Samoy, Jr. was delivered
by Dr. Elizabeth Carig who encouraged the members of the body to continue the dialogue across
borders. “Let’s be the change makers!” she exclaimed.
