PROJECT COMPONENTS

A. Establishment of Nursery

A four-unit gutter-connected sawtooth greenhouse with fully automatic
irrigation system (mist and drip irrigation) was constructed for the
propagation and acclimatization of nipa seedlings before the actual planting
in the plantation area. This 6 meters x 24 meters nursery was designed to
withstand the extreme weather of Gonzaga.

B. Identification of Recipients

Identified recipients of the program are fisherfolks from Aparri and Sta.
Ana with existing group or association.

C. Capability building

To prepare the fisherfolk for the actual implementation of the program, the
CSU-Gonzaga conducted trainings on propagation of bamboo seedlings,
plantation maintenance and protection.

D. Establishment of nipa plantation

CSU Gonzaga established nipa plantations in Sta. Ana and Aparri.
In Sta. Ana, Cagayan, a 50-hectare new nipa plantation was planted with
120,000 seedlings. In Aparri, a total of 75,000 nipa seedlings were planted
in a 60-hectare nipa restoration area.

E. Maintenance and protection

To ensure proper maintenance and protection of the established nipa
plantations, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)
alotted 250,000 pesos annually for 3 years as incentive for the beneficiaries.
